Dedicated to the women who RIDE THEIR OWN motorcycles

by Thumper

My hubby bought his first Harley in Oct. of 2001. I really liked riding on the back, but couldn't help but think if he could do that why couldn't I? I think he got tired of hearing me telling him I wanted my own bike. As luck would have it a friend had a 96 Shadow for sale and the price was too good to pass up. Tony bought the Shadow for me as a 50th Birthday present. My family thought I had lost my mind. I took my MSF class and passed with flying colors. Now I had my motorcycle endorsement. We rode together out here in the country a little, but Leesburg Bike Fest was upon us. So for my first big ride, it's only 10 miles from my house, off we headed with another couple on our way to Leesburg. It rained all day in Leesburg and all I could keep thinking was I have to ride this thing back home. After all, I rode it there.

We had a wonderful day and then it was dark and the streets were wet. I was so proud of myself. I handled all the traffic on Main Street, even found a great parking place right in the middle of all those bikes, parked it. Headed out for home, a nervous wreck due to the rain. We all decided we needed to stop and grab a bite to eat before we went home. I had done so well up to this point. Ate a little late dinner came out and got on the bike to head the rest of the way home. Got it started and just as I was pulling out of the parking space out of the clear blue the bike is on the ground. What happened, who knows....Hubby and our friend both are now off their bikes helping me upright mine. Got back on her and headed the rest of the way home.

I live on a dirt road, so back down the dirt road and home. It was an awesome experience for a 50 year old lady. Whoever thought at 50 I would be riding my own bike. I have never been sorry for taking this aspect of my life on. Since then I have ridden to Daytona a couple of times alone and then all the way to Vero Beach with another woman I ride a lot with. I can say this, without all the encouragement I have gotten from other women I don't know if I would have come this far or not. They have all been awesome in their compassion, strength and advice.
